What’s the Difference Between My Substack Profile and My Publication?

If you’re not sure whether you’re supposed to be editing your profile or your publication, you’re not missing something obvious.
Substack makes these two things look connected, but they serve very different purposes.
Understanding the difference clears up a surprising amount of confusion.
You’re not the only one who gets stuck here
This is one of the most common questions I hear from new Substack users.
People often ask:
- “Why does my name show up in some places but not others?”
- “Where am I supposed to explain what I write about?”
- “Why did I update something… and nothing changed?”
That confusion usually comes down to mixing up your profile and your publication.
What’s actually happening on Substack
When you use Substack, you are always operating in two layers:
Your Profile
This represents you as a person on Substack.
It shows up when:
- you comment on posts
- you interact in Notes
- someone clicks on your name
Your profile helps people understand who you are across the platform.
Your Publication
This represents what people are subscribing to.
It includes:
- your publication name
- your About page
- your welcome emails
- your posts, sections, and settings
Your publication is where the relationship with subscribers actually lives.
Both matter, but they do different jobs.
Common mix-ups (very normal)
If things feel unclear, it’s often because of one of these:
- Writing a long bio on your profile and leaving the publication About page empty
- Trying to explain your newsletter topic in the profile instead of the publication
- Editing the profile and expecting it to change how your publication looks
- Not realizing subscribers rarely see your profile at all
None of this is wrong — it’s just not obvious until someone points it out.
How to think about it instead
A simple way to remember the difference:
- Your profile says who you are.
- Your publication says what you offer and who it’s for.
If someone subscribes, they’re subscribing to the publication — not the profile.
So when you’re deciding where something belongs, ask:
“Is this about me, or is this about the reader?”
That one question usually gives you the answer.
