How Do Welcome Emails Work on Substack?

If you’ve heard that Substack has “welcome emails” but you’re not quite sure what that means or whether you’re supposed to be doing something with them, you’re not alone.

Welcome emails exist on Substack whether you touch them or not. That alone can feel unsettling if you don’t know how they work.

This is a very common point of confusion

New Substack users often wonder:

  • “Did Substack send something without me knowing?”
  • “Am I supposed to write these before I publish?”
  • “What happens if I don’t change anything?”
  • “Can I break something by editing them?”

These are reasonable questions. Substack doesn’t give much context here.

What’s actually happening when someone subscribes

When a reader subscribes to your publication, Substack automatically sends welcome emails on your behalf.

These emails are part of the publication itself, not your personal email account.

They are meant to:

  • confirm the subscription
  • help the reader understand what they’ve joined
  • set expectations going forward

You don’t need to “turn them on.” They’re already there.

What trips people up

Most confusion around welcome emails comes from one of these:

  • Not realizing the emails exist until later
  • Assuming they need to be perfect before publishing anything
  • Thinking editing them might affect past subscribers
  • Avoiding them entirely because they feel technical

None of these cause harm. But they do add unnecessary mental load.

A calmer way to think about welcome emails

Welcome emails are not a marketing sequence.

They’re simply a quiet orientation tool for new subscribers.

At a minimum, they help answer:

  • What is this publication?
  • What can I expect?
  • How often will I hear from you?

You can leave them simple. You can revise them later. You can even leave the defaults for now.

Nothing breaks if they’re imperfect.

What to focus on first (high-level guidance)

When you’re ready, and only when you’re ready, focus on:

  • Making sure the welcome message reflects your publication, not just the default text
  • Setting clear, calm expectations for readers
  • Keeping the tone aligned with how you actually write

You don’t need a sequence. You don’t need a strategy. You just need clarity.
