What Is a Substack About Page Actually For?

If you’re unsure what to write on your Substack About page, or you’ve written something and it doesn’t quite feel right, you’re not alone.

The About page is one of the most misunderstood parts of Substack, especially for new users.

This confusion is completely normal

Most people approach the About page thinking:

  • “I should introduce myself”
  • “I need to explain my background”
  • “I’ll come back to this later”

Substack doesn’t explain what the About page does, so people either overthink it or avoid it altogether.

That’s not a problem, you just need some context.

What your About page actually does on Substack

Your About page is not a bio.

It’s a decision-making page for the reader.

When someone lands on your Substack, the About page helps them answer one quiet question:

“Is this for me?”

That’s it.

Everything on the page exists to help a potential subscriber understand:

  • what they’ll receive
  • what topics you cover
  • what kind of experience they can expect

Your story matters, but only as it helps the reader orient themselves.

Common About page mistakes (very understandable)

If your About page feels off, it’s usually because of one of these:

  • Writing it like a résumé or personal biography
  • Talking mostly about your background, not the publication
  • Being vague to avoid “boxing yourself in”
  • Leaving it empty because you’re not ready yet

None of these hurt your Substack. They just don’t help the reader decide.

A simpler way to think about your About page

Instead of asking “What should I say about myself?”, try this:

  • Who is this publication for?
  • What will they get by subscribing?
  • What kinds of topics or conversations live here?

You don’t need to sound polished. You don’t need to commit to everything forever.

You just need to help the reader feel oriented and welcomed.

You can refine this as you go

Your About page is not permanent.

Many experienced Substack writers update theirs multiple times as their publication evolves.

It’s better to have a clear, imperfect About page than a blank one you’re waiting to feel ready for.
